Health & Wellbeing

What is health & wellbeing coaching?

Health and wellbeing coaches support people to increase their motivation levels, commitment to change their lifestyle and ability to self-manage. They are experts in behaviour change and are focused on improving health related outcomes by working with people to set personalised goals and change their behaviour. They work with people with physical and/or mental health conditions and those at risk of developing them.

Health and wellbeing coaches can be an effective intervention for people experiencing a range of long-term conditions, including respiratory, cardiovascular (including type 2 diabetes and hypertension), and stress/low mood. They can also support people with weight management, diet and increasing activity levels.

How do I make an appointment to see a health and wellbeing coach?

The health and wellbeing coaches are accessible via your GP surgery without the need for a referral. When contacting your surgery for an appointment, the reception team may suggest you speak to a health and wellbeing coach. A member of the team will then be in touch with more information and to find out if health coaching will be suitable for you. You can also refer yourself into the health and wellbeing service here.

What can I expect from an appointment with a health and wellbeing coach?

During the first session with a health and wellbeing coach, they will find out more about you, your lifestyle, values, goals and anything that might get in the way of achieving those goals. You will then set some short-term goals that will enable you to start to work towards what it is you want to achieve. In the sessions that follow, you will review your current progress, set new goals and discuss any challenges you might have faced to help you overcome these in the future. In doing so, health coaching helps you develop the skills and confidence to manage your health and wellbeing.
