Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy technician play an important role in the PCN framework; complimenting clinical and community pharmacists, as well as other members of the network team. While clinical pharmacists have the clinical decision-making, pharmacy technicians would be able to make clinical judgements; working under supervision to ensure the effective and efficient use of prescribed and non-prescribed medication.

In the PCN, their core responsibilities cover clinical, technical, and administrative roles.

Under the pharmacist’s supervision, pharmacy technicians can offer the following services:

  • Patient safety audits and contact patients to follow up.
  • Pre-work for long terms conditions (LTC).
  • Medicine Synchronization Reviews.
  • Medication monitoring.
  • Actioning clinical letters.
  • Pre-work for SMRs, for patients in the community and Care Homes.
  • Action Care home medication queries from Clinicians, Care homes staff, and patients.

Medication queries can originate from the GP practices as well as requests from the Care Home Coordinators. Most appointments are over the phone; however, some patients can request a face-to-face appointment if they desire.
